Glasgow Primary Schools

Castlemilk, Dalmarnock & Crookston

DESCRIPTION:

The contract was for the construction of three primary schools for St Bartholomew’s R.C. Primary School in Castlemilk, Dalmarnock Primary and Crookston Primary.

Crookston had a school roll of 550 including teaching accommodation for pupils with learning difficulties and a nursery. At St Bartholomew the school roll was 280 pupils and Dalmarnock was 370 pupils.  Both St Bartholomew’s and Dalmarnock included nursery facilities.

INVOLVEMENT:

The provision of civil and structural engineering services. For all schools the structural form of the building comprised a structural steel frame with the suspended floors being constructed using insitu concrete on metal decking. The substructure generally comprised reinforced concrete pad foundations bearing on the natural soil strata.

CHALLENGES:

The steep topography and site constraints of the Crookston site tested the engineering aptitude to provide a satisfactory solution. At St Bartholomew’s lime stabilisation was used to maximise reuse of excavated material.  This minimised the volume of material taken off site.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT:

High quality facilities completed on time and within budget.
