ROLLS ROYCE CHANGES TO FACTORY LAYOUT

INCHINNAN, RENFREWSHIRE

DESCRIPTION:

The project involved moving Rolls Royce operations from an older Rolls Royce factory to the newer Inchinnan facility.

INVOLVEMENT:

The design involved understanding the structural requirements for new and relocated plant and therefore a close relationship developed with the Rolls Royce factory design team.  The relocation involved both internal and external plant and cranage.  The scheme also included a new car park for 300 cars.

CHALLENGES:

The main challenge involved understanding the particular structural requirements for the existing machinery once relocated.  Some of the plant was old and therefore information regarding loading was limited.  Also understanding the craneage requirements meant close consultation with Rolls Royce to schedule the cranes that could be moved.  The Inchinnan factory had a wider structural grid and therefore additional secondary steelwork spanning between the roof trusses was required to provide support to the relocated crane rails.
